My latest paintings are a series called In Praise of Shadows, as well as shadows they praise light and the play between them both. To me, land is a living and breathing thing and I am trying to express this in the way that I paint it; I want to capture the sense of its life beyond our observation but within our knowledge.
From
the cover of a tent in the fen landscape, I paint with
soft eyes, letting colours melt into one another or catch my attention from the corner of my eye, looking too directly makes things harden and removes them from their surroundings, I want my paintings to evoke the feeling of everything being one. Painting for me is a meditative experience where I can contemplate the wonder of the natural world but not so much through thoughts but in colour and form.
